Rochester Next Week

I am super pumped to be showing work in one of my favorite cities next week.
Guess what, I'm still making map creatures!

Here's a sneak peak:

Back in Action

Not that I was ever out of action-- this summer was a blur.

Camp was jam-packed with activity, emotion, awakenings and a minor head injury. Feeling awake and alive and ready, for something.

What's next ! I got to be in Bethlehem for a couple days, then scooted over to NYC for a minute which was completely overwhelming and now I'm en route to Burlington, VT to see my best friends and I'll end up living on a farm with some other friends for an undetermined number of weeks.

Otherwise, during the tiny scrap of time I was home I managed to put up a version of Countries Anonymous at Moravian Academy Upper School, as an exhibit featuring an alum artist (me), which was great because I got to get back into my artist mind and body, and also got to catch up with my high school art teacher.

So if you're in the MA community, check it out! It'll be up until September 21.

Countries Anonymous

Oh you thought I was done !!

The truth is, I have another show with all new work opening on Friday. That's this Friday. What I'm trying to say is 5 days from now.

Three other studio art majors are renting out a great space at the Hungerford Building to fill with our creations and the opening HAPPENS to coincide with First Friday, so all sorts of other awesome arty things will be waiting for your eyes to enjoy them in the same place (it's not a coincidence, we cleverly planned it that way).

So come check it out!

Even though we are renting the same space, the four of us have each have solo shows and I can tell you right now that they are all really great.  My show is called Countries Anonymous (wonder what the heck that means? You'll have to come on Friday...)

The reception starts at 6 PM, Friday May 4, 2012, and goes to about 10 PM.

Photos from Op/Ed

I can't say thank you enough to everyone who came and especially those who helped out with this show. If you were not able to be there (or just want to reminisce) here are some photos from the exhibition:

Thank you!

The reception for Op/Ed last night was great! The food disappeared in about 20 minutes and people still kept coming anyway... It was so fun to share my work with the people I love, plus some new faces.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped, everyone who supported, and everyone who came to the show.

More photos coming soon!

Reception for Op/Ed at the Art & Music Library, University of Rochester

Op/Ed

My first solo exhibition, Op/Ed opens tomorrow-- excited??

I've been making things and not sleeping very much in preparation for the show, so you should probably come check it out if you are in Rochester, NY.

The gallery is in the Art & Music Library on the first floor of Rush Rhees, and the show will be up until April 9th.

The reception is on Thursday April 5, from 5 - 7 PM and it should be a blast so at least come to that.  See you there.

Meat consumption in the United States has reached approximately 200 pounds of meat per person per year.  Despite comprising such a significant part of our diets, U.S. Americans seem relatively unconcerned with the process behind meat production.  The images of the animals and farms we grew up picturing are semi-fantastical illustrations of a much more disturbing reality.

Many consumers are vaguely aware of factory farms, industrial agriculture and the unfathomable distance from farm to table; the information isn’t new.  What does it take to (dis)associate ourselves with the practices related to our food (or to keep from associating in the first place)?

Op/Ed speaks to the distortion of information in the media alongside the distortion of information surrounding our food sources and production.  It calls on humans to act on our ability to question food, as we disregard our ability to harvest or kill food for ourselves.  Can we put our lifestyles, our food, and our priorities in context?
